2021.12.07 14:20 redrocketunicorn Gift ideas for your partners stocking! These are specific to my wife but please share your thoughts and ideas as well (stocking specific or not). I'm sure there are so many good ones!

Someone in the community asked what would be good gifts for their wife's stocking. I love the stocking tradition and was extremely excited to be able share. It can be such a fun experience, like a gift giving appetizer! After I wrote out my list, I noticed that the op had asked only for women to reply. So, I decided to start my own thread.
My wife has enjoyed the following in her stocking. I really hope that these suggestions will be a help to others either to use or to be inspired by, this year and years to come. Some are pretty basic others are more creative. Here's the list:
-makeup
~perfume
-some inexpensive jewelry (hide the expensive stuff in the tree, my wife loves that)
~little liquor bottles
-I once wrapped up a key in there for a box I locked under the tree with an expensive bottle of wine (but you could lock up anything)
~tickets (concert, movie, theater, etc)
-shoelaces for sneakers you wrapped up (or any small item that you can wrap up separately from a gift under the tree. My wife really finds this particularly fun)
~a book or DVD (but these are becoming obsolete), or one year I got her a farmer's almanac
-gift certificates/cards
~a "chores you can do for her" coupon book
-couples items (think and adam & eve website)
~mani/pedi items (fake nails, nail polish, toe separator, etc)
-tea/coffee packs,
~bottles of beer, soda, or any bevy, really
-gloves, hats, scarfs
~grooming items (like tweezers and nail clippers)
-charcuterie items (cheese, meats, olives, fruits, nuts, honey, etc)
~different ingredients for cookies to bake together (or a cake, or something like that)
-one year I added whipped cream and strawberry syrup and then made waffles for breakfast (I've been thinking of adding ham and veggies for omelets some year) maybe steak, pasta or burger toppings for a dinner
~pining earrings to the outside of the stocking is fun
-bath items (soaps, shampoos, loofah, etc.)
~candles
-travel items
~jarred foods like pickles (my wife loves pickles)
-an ornament to place on the tree
~items for the car (Alexa auto, odor hiders, glove box organizer, decorations, etc)
-a decoration she can put right up (like a little mistletoe, wink wink )
~tank tops, panties, socks
-and I add a toothbrush every year because I also always add candy
Above all the best gifts I've noticed are ones that you can have fun with her or that she can have fun with. Be thoughtful and creative about it, and then she'll be more happy to kiss you under that mistletoe!
Please share your thoughts and ideas as well. I'd really love new insights and inspiration! Love giving the woman I love surprises during the holidays.

2021.12.07 14:20 Wanderer2691 Honestly, the more I look at Fates' story, the more I feel that in spite of a lot of its massive, massive flaws, the more I seriously appreciate the set-pieces and cohesive identity the game has throughout the entire game.

Now it goes without saying that Fire Emblem Fates is a disappointment on the story front for a lot of people. Odovakr's essay on Fire Emblem Fates is remarkably well-written and goes into pretty concise detail what doesn't really work in the overall package. While I cannot comment on all of the criticisms due to me disagreeing with quite a bit of them, I will say that the general gist of what they're coming from is indeed a really good analysis. Fates is a story that's fundamentally borked the more you look at it, as it as bad pacing, tons of confusing moments, a massive overreliance on contrivance and plot devices, and rarely any actual good story moments...
...and yet, I genuinely enjoyed most of the story despite the massive, massive flaws.
It was really weird, because logically-speaking, they have too many issues and the overall reaction was negative for the reasons I've brought up on top of the variety of circumstances surrounding the work. It was something that puzzled me, and even in 2016 where I was isolated for my unabashed enjoyment of the work compared to the cavalcade of hatred the story received, I couldn't really wrap my head around it even as I tried to come up with reasons, especially as I was exposed to more and more stories elsewhere in the series. It wasn't as though I enjoyed schlock, for one thing - I tend to respond the most positively to stories with deep, meaningful aspects to it on a visual and atmospheric sense, especially ones that have a very strong feel or emotional connection to me. Valkyria Chronicles 1 has a very nuanced take on the Holocaust if through a fantasy analogue, I was deeply engrossed in the storytelling and complex themes of Berserk, and Persona 4 & 5 are some of my GOAT games. And it wasn't as though I haven't responded pretty poorly to gutter trash either in storytelling, like Pokémon Sword/Shield or Zanki Zero.
And yet, again, Fates won me over in spite of everything it mucks up on. I wanted to know why, because I couldn't rationalize that it was for no discernible reason. Was it because the characters saved it for me? Fates has an amazing and lovable cast that's one of my favorite casts in any story, but a good characters can only go so far in saving bad writing, given how much I've hated Ultra Despair Girls and a lot of Danganronpa in general. games with very memorable and stylized characters, but even worse weeb degeneracy than Fates delves into... as well as some very insensitive depictions of gender, trauma and even pedophilia portrayed in unflattering, or worse, romanticized depictions of such. Then was it the themes? I thought so, but the themes are too disgruntled to really work with the way Fates ties them together. Was it the ideas Fates had that you like than the actual story? I don't think so, because I'd argue Fates does have some aspects from its ideas that were executed well outside of the main story, and if it was a case of 'good ideas, bad execution,' I would not like it nearly as much as I have.
So, what is it then? I was wondering to myself this question for quite a while what I felt caused me to enjoy and find so much meaning from something that most others rightfully regard as a trainwreck, and it led me to effectively realize that there is something that Fates manages to do very cohesively, in such a way that I loved so much that it ultimately connected to me as much as it did.
The set-pieces.
Now, let me define what the "official" definition of set-pieces are: a set piece is a big moment or central identity within the story, usually to coincide with quite a lot of build-up to a cohesive prospect and pay-off for it, and it as a result has a large effect on the general 'identity' of the plot. This form of storytelling is as much narrative as it often is visual and atmospheric, and as a result you tend to see this a lot in video games and movies. Two good examples of great set-pieces are the lobby sequence in The Matrix, and the opening interrogation in Pulp Fiction. Both are really central to cementing the general identity of a work, or more specifically the feel of it - while narrative mechanics are invariably a lot more focused on plot threads, pay-off through foreshadowing, rising tension and climax, set-pieces are unique in that they usually operate within a separate medium of themselves regarding the identity of a work. A particularly good analogue for this is while the mechanics of a story when dissected for analysis is the presentation of a work in a literate sense, set-pieces are large, important checkpoints that provide the presentation of a work in a visual sense. It's where a lot of the general narrative ends up being less told through the mechanics of the story so much as the general identity the work presents itself on, how something feels to look at or experience directly as opposed to the concrete moments that work or not. It's something that I think can often lead to bad or below-average stories being bolstered by having strong set-pieces, while stories that are genuinely great can suffer by not having these same set-pieces and feel of a work's cohesive identity.
I suppose I should clarify both how that applies to Fates, and why it applies.
The how is that some of my favorite media of all time have a really, really strong 'identity feel' to it in the general connection of its set-pieces. Some of my favorite games of all time are Fallout 3 - a game that is generally looked down by Fallout fans of being a worse New Vegas writing-wise (which I'd debate as 3 has some really good writing even with more misfires comparatively, but that's a different topic), but what drew me into Fallout 3 was how strong the general feel of isolation, atmospheric dread and the apocalyptic, dead lifelessness of the world was literally unmatched in any game I've played, and it made me all the more willing to deeply engage with the world. The lack of being able to encounter almost anyone outside of the settlement alongside the harrowing sound of nuclear wind made one of the most bittersweet and memorable experiences I've ever had in a game.
Another great example of how set-pieces come into play is with Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony - stories I personally would say aren't that good in a vaccuum, but are upheld both by the dark, fearful atmosphere of the work but more importantly what the game does with that atmosphere. Without going into too much spoilers, the game kills off characters that anyone going blind simply wouldn't expect, alongside the sardonic, downright disrespectful lack of regard the antagonist have for the 15/16 teenagers trapped in the death game leads to a lot of well-executed black comedy and a consistently tense, sarcastic atmosphere that presents it as able to know how to switch between sheer horror and slapstick anime comedy despite honestly lacking that talent. It's a case of a story that if you removed the set-pieces and 'story feel' from it, it becomes a far worse product for me given how much it's held up by that general sense of identity present in the work.
And that brings me to the why, or why it applies to Fates so much.
I'll just say it straight-up: Fates has some of the strongest cohesive identity and set-pieces I've ever seen in a video game for quite some time. Which is impressive, given a lot of the story is so fundamentally borked with how it's approached that if you removed that identity and set-pieces, then yeah, Fates would literally have nothing going for it story-wise, because the set-pieces and identity are its greatest strength as a work IMO. From the way each and every one of the locations in the continent have a clear and detailed identity present to it (from revolutionary Chevois to the Venetian-inspired Nesta to the beastial and elemental tribes to each of the different locations you visit including the Endless Stairway), even as far as the general cohesive identity of each of the classes and their divide across the Bottomless Chasm between medieval Europe and feudal Japan. The way each of the emotions, motifs (however unused they wound up), general cohesive identity and feel of the Hoshidan weapons versus the Nohrian weapons, the collective identity of the work as a whole as well as the sheer investment and pay-off into the general story beats and identities it clearly bestows across the work, Fates has IMHO the single strongest sense of self of any game in the series, both with how it presents its classes and identity and what it does with it, whether that succeeds or doesn't work out.
To describe what I mean, I bring up both how the gameplay and visuals are designed around the 'light vs. dark' dichotomy that the game wounds up being built around, which is it's central thematic as a wholesale regarding things like design, classes, visuals and weapons. Nohr and Hoshido were respectively written in katakana (usually for foreign words) and kanji (usually for home-grown words) in the Japanese version of Fire Emblem Fates to highlight the difference between the classes, and to say nothing about the general aesthetic and feel of both of the nations. Hoshido hires largely from the nobility for the retainers, while Nohr is so desperate that it doesn't care what station a retainer comes from so long as they fight. Hoshido's army is a lot more reliant on dodging and finesse while Nohr has far more tanky and defensive soldiery across the board. Nohrian weapons are distinct and prototypical in Fire Emblem's historical tendency to specialized classes of weapons that have broad usage, while Hoshido's weaponry has many situational elements designed around it that have incredible application when used in different circumstances. Many of them even are generally built around how a weapon feels in this regard, and Hoshidan weapons outright have a different icon, animations (for some classes, like NohHoshido Noble) and stat bonuses/penalties versus Nohrian weapons. This is to say nothing of unique/My Castle weapons, which tend to be so distinct and with a variety of uses that they often can radically change the options a unit can use.
More importantly, how they feel is so distinct even when looking at Conquest, a game with classes and weapons very close to past games. Nohr is very much dying and willing to do anything to win, and much of the game's difficulty wounds up working with the player as it's always an uphill struggle filled with a "trail a blood," as Saizo puts it in Chapter 25. Birthright, while mechanically similar to Awakening, nonetheless feels distinct and much more like a prototypical hero's quest with several rather insidious indications within the work that more's there to it than they seem, with the lack of representing the bloodshed of the Nohrians unlike in Conquest, the massive rout maps...
...of course, it should be noted and clarified that this doesn't change the often confusing, poorly-explained and plot hole-filled issues that come up with Fates' story on the wholesale. That's not what I'm getting at, however, especially when Fates does something that I think no other FE sans a few others really managed to do: stand out with this visual identity to me in a sea of fantasy games.
Even going beyond Nohr and Hoshido, how the rest of the locales and minor nations work - from the divine and neutral Izumo, to the backstabbing and genocidal Mokushu, to the Burning Falls amid Nohr's landscape to the Endless Stairway - what strikes me as unique about Fates is that each of the locations all have something I can clearly ascribe a trait and identity towards, and they stand out in my mind a lot more due to how unique the feel of those locations often are. Because of that as well as how clearly-integrated into the game's DNA the dichotomy between light and dark is often treated as, the game stands out a lot more in my mind, even for better or for worse. I don't think there's really many other locations in FE's worldbuilding that doesn't feel kind of homogenized compared to its neighbors or parallels. Sure, most FE fans can recall Crimea or Lycia, but what about the individual locations, the identity alongside it? There's definitely exceptions to the rule (Sacae, Ilia and the Western Isles are supremely interesting to me for this reason), but a lot of fantasy in general definitely feels like it takes from mythology and places it in medieval fantasy and calls it a day. They call this a Standard Fantasy Setting, which has a ton of carry-over elements, and while Fire Emblem's unique compared to other fantasy settings, even then it definitely feels kinda blended in with the mix overall. Can anyone tell the difference, genuinely deep down, to a core identity that Faerghus and Adrestia have that, in spite of their games' excellent writing, feels a bit more than 'The Empire' or 'The Good Kingdom' without it feeling like it's been done before a ton?
I think that's where Fates, even now, manages to stand out to me so much. Even now, I feel the way the world and general feel of the game is designed around that identity, and it oozes out of it from its characterization, to its world design, to its thematics to its general sense of self, and it manages to constantly intrigue me because I've never really seen the attempt at a light vs. dark angle done like that. And more interestingly is the fact that how the devs sought to implement it was clearly taking that light vs. dark element and humanizing both sides in a meaningful way - Hoshido obviously stands out to bias over Nohr, but both sides have likable and human characters even underneath their larger-than-life personalities, and it makes me all the more invested in that setting because of how much it speaks to me on the wholesale.
Now obviously, the writing is bad, so it's not like they've managed to encapsulate on this identity, right? I'd agree, given how many issues the game's story has, but I think it's the sheer force of its identity combined with genuinely trying to frame the typical "light is good, dark is evil" story in a way that makes it humane that I fucking love so goddamn much. Obviously, they didn't succeed, given how much of the story ended up being cut and moved away from the vision. But just from how thorough the game's identity is, even through the little dialogue you get with My Castle that nobody ever reads, it gives me a saudade that feels impossible to really replicate in any other game. And the way such a cohesive identity is tied to a game with such an objectively flawed narrative manages to be tragic to me - and it ultimately makes me want more, because this game's sense of identity built on my own when I deeply needed it, and gave me the view of the world I had now.
That, I think, is truly special.
Fates has a really bad story on the whole sale when you dissect it, but I'd argue that a lot of it doesn't really need scrapping, because the set-pieces and general feel of the work when you get into it is really strong - hell, I originally felt before that Chapter 19 of Conquest needed reworking due to the feeling like there was no reason Kaden wouldn't let them past, but given they're being poached, it made the reasoning a lot more easy to understand than I originally thought, which sucks as it's not the reasoning they went with. But I think it's just how much Fates shines when it's clear it wants to show off meaningful spectacle with its world and vision, and the whole thing on a meta level feels really somber given what the game could've been... that vision, that damn vision is something I feel even now, I felt in 2016 when I first played the game, and I hope to feel in it's completion when the game ends up getting a remake in 2030 or something. The game truly I think has some of the strongest cohesive identity of a game I've ever seen, and with set-pieces that good, it'd be criminal if they never got the chance to act on it in the future ever again.
Anyways, I apologize if this little rant ends up being terrible. This game means so much to me even given the glaring flaws that I wanted to share how I felt and why the game's identity means so much to me. I'll probably delete it if it isn't good, lol. Thanks. ^^

2021.12.07 14:20 Gilwen Degiro delaying transfer to IBKR for 5 weeks now

Hey apes,
Euro-lurker here, I rarely post but I would like to share my experience with Degiro so far (spoiler: shady af). Also I would like to know if anyone had these issues as well and how I can move forward in this matter.
I have requested FOP transfer from Degiro to IBKR at the beginning of November. I send them an e-mail mid-November as I didn't receive any confirmation, and I was told that they had contacted IBKR and were still waiting for confirmation.
At the end of November, I contacted Degiro again. They don't regularly reply to e-mails, some are just ignored so I had to contact them multiple times. Eventually I was advised that there would be fees of 56 € and they'd need my confirmation. No shit, sherlock, the fees were already detailed on the transfer form I initially filled out. Anyways, I had to re-confirm the fees via e-mail and was told that they were still waiting for confirmation of IBKR on my details. Naturally, I contacted IBKR and they advised me that they had provided all the information a little earlier.
For over a week, there's been complete silence now. Even if I acknowledge the fact that IBKR has somehow taken roughly a month to confirm my name, it's been another week where Degiro isn't moving at all. Now I know for sure that they have everything they need, and I'm getting more and more frustrated. I told them I would contact the relevant authorities and I have indeed just filed a complaint with BaFin. I sent Degiro another mail and told them about it but I'm still stuck in this position where I can only wait.
Any experiences or tips? Thanks in advance
